How do you remove rust from a metal frame on a home window screen?

Make a paste of baking soda and water in a bowl. Apply the paste to the oxidized area and let it sit there for a few hours. After the time has elapsed, rub the paste with a brush. Rinse the area with clean water and you'll see the rust disappear.

When metal has rusted, throwing it away in the trash and buying a replacement isn't always an option. You can remove rust with household ingredients, such as aluminum foil and a mild acid, such as white vinegar, or with special chemicals to remove rust. With any rust removal method, it will take a little patience and effort to remove rust. However, with some time and effort, you can remove rust from many metal surfaces.

Old stock rust remover chemicals contain phosphoric or hydrochloric acid to dissolve rust. These are aggressive chemicals that emit very intense vapors, so wear rubber gloves, goggles and a respirator. Find them in the paint department of any home center. You'll also need an old paint brush, a waste bin, a 3-inch spatula, and rags.

Dip the brush in clean water and scrub the rusty areas. Some areas clean much faster than others, so it may take several brushes to start dissolving. In this work, perseverance is key. Any especially unruly area should be treated with a mixture of water and baking soda.

Allow this mixture to dry for two hours, before wiping it gently with a soaked hand towel or cloth.
