I know a lot of people who are far from organized, and spend copious amounts of time searching for items they’ve misplaced, being late to appointments they’ve forgotten about, etc.

There are a lot of products out there for those with good intentions. However, no organization system is an effective solution unless you work on keeping up with it. Maybe its 10 minutes a week, but you need to devote time to keeping up with whatever organization system you’ve decided to utilize. The more you put into it, the more you will get out of it. One of my favorite products designed to help out in everyone's not so favorite time of the year below.
